Teaching Your Dog to Sit

This article assumes that you have a basic working knowledge of clicker training and you dog is conditioned to the clicker. If you need a clicker training primer before you begin, visit my clicker section and read the “introduction to clicker training” articles.

Induce the sit by holding a tidbit or toy in front of the dog’s nose, and moving it above and behind the dog’s head, luring him into a sit position. Click and reinforce him with the tidbit when he sits.

Repeat this several times until the dog sits smoothly and quickly when lured into position. Then, start giving the sit command just prior to inducing the sit. When the dog starts to sit on command, stop using the lure and simply reinforce when the dog sits.
