Dog Training Gadgets and Gear
In my experience, people are looking for actual information on the internet, not just another place to buy stuff. But, if you do want to purchase dog training equipment, here are some recommendations for what to get and where to get it. I’m fairly selective about what I list here, and my comments are candid. I don’t receive a commission on the sale of anything reviewed on this site.
Retractable Clickers The Retract-O-Click is a clicker on a handy retractable belt clip. These are great! No more dropping your clicker or fishing around for it in your pocket.
Regular Clickers So, you’ve heard all about clicker training….but where on earth do you get the clickers? Right here!
Halti Training Head Collar This link takes you to the PETsMART.com page selling the Halti. I strongly recommend headcollars for anyone who’s dog pulls on leash, and the Halti is one of the best brands.
Gentle Leader This is the website for Gentle Leader, another maker of headcollars for dogs. I strongly recommend headcollars for anyone who’s dog pulls on leash.
Gentle Leader Training Collar by Premier Pet If you elect to purchase a Gentle Leader, this link will take you to the PetSmart page offering them for sale.
The Kong Company makes some of the best and safest dog toys available. Be sure to read their section on how to use a Kong to keep your dog entertained.

Molecuball Dog Toys by OurPet’s This hard rubber toy can be filled with kibble, peanut butter, and other treats that are dispensed as your dog plays with it.
BusterCube Buster Cube This durable plastic cube holds treats or your dog’s regular kibble ration, and dispenses it slowly as the dog tumbles the cube. Great for keeping “home alone” dogs occupied (and not shredding your belongings!). Will keep food motivated dogs busy for hours.
DirectStop Animal Deterrent Spray I absolutely cannot say enough good things about this product. It is a painless alternative to pepper spray developed for halting dog attacks that REALLY works! It is also invaluable for breaking up dog fights, protecting your leashed dog from being attacked or harrassed by off-leash bullies, stopping out-of-control dogs who “attack” the front door or fence when someone approaches, and much more. It is completely safe, so it can be given to children walking to work to protect them from loose dogs. It can be used by mail carriers and delivery drivers to defend yourself from dogs without pepper-spraying them and angering the owner. May not stop trained attack dogs or dogs with an abnormally high level of aggression. Try it, this stuff is gold!
Citronella Bark Dog Collars by Premier Pet Products Citronella spray anti-bark collars are an ultra-humane way to effortlessly solve barking problems. This price offered by PetSmart is much lower than I have seen in the past. Scat Mats for Dogs or Cats
Electronic mat designed to keep your dog off of furnature and tabletops. For an article on keeping your dog off furnature, click here.
Sofa Scram Motion detection mat sets off a loud alarm when stepped on. For an article on keeping your dog off furnature, click here.
Alley-Oop Target The best free-standing target ever for obedience and agility clicker trainers. Highly recommended if you use targeting methods.
DOG TRAINING EQUIPMENT SITES
Dogwise is a reputable company with a great selection; just keep in mind that there are some very bad dog training books available. Buy carefully! See Books for recommendations.
Legacy By Mail sells motivational training books, toys, and equipment, including clickers.
AmeraPet Industries AmeraPet is an old-fashioned small American business with high quality, low prices, and personal attention to service. If you call AmeraPet, chances are you’ll talk to the owner. She sells high quality leather and nylon leashes and collars, as well as training collars. Leashes are handmade in latigo and harness leather, with brass bolt or loc-jaw snaps. They will also do special orders at very reasonable prices. This is my supplier of choice for leather leads and collars.
Trainer’s Choice (now Bridgeport Leather) Great buys on high quality leather tracking harnesses, agitation harnesses, assistance and guide dog harnesses, and more. Best buys anywhere on agitation collars and leads for protection training. The only thing I haven’t been impressed with is the quality of the bite sleeves sold for protection training.
The Moriah Company Premium quality leather collars, leads, and harnesses. The products sold here are more expensive than Trainer’s Choice or AmeraPet, but if you want some of the best quality leather available it will be worth it. Even the company’s “standard obedience leash” is sturdy enough for protection work. Moriah offers an unusually large dyed color selection….they offer a wide variety of colors, as well as a whole range of browns. If you buy a dyed leash, get a bottle of neatsfoot oil and oil the leash heavily before the first use or the dye will tend to flake off. This doesn’t seem to be a problem once the lead is oiled.
Eurosport supplier of police and protection training equipment. I have not ordered from this company yet personally, but they have excellent prices on training sleves and sleeve covers.
J and J Dog Supplies Competition obedience, agility, and flyball equipment.

I have been using the Alley Oop training target for a long time but havve heard that they have discontinued it due to the lead content in it. Are they going to be making anything else like it, or is there anything already out there like it already that I don’t know about? It is a shame that they have stopped making this GREAT training aid. Please help.

Dear Claire,
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:29 amYou can get an Alley Oop - or as many as you like — at my website. It wasn’t discontinued because of the lead, by the way - it’s fully contained and lead is inert under 800 degrees F.
Regards,
Gary Wilkes
The Alley Oop dog training tool is back by popular demand and is available at www.clickandtreat.com Even better than ever!
