Teaching Your Dog to Climb Stairs

The Situation:Our family just recently purchased a 1 yr. 9 month old collie. A problem that we eventually found is that this dog has never climbed stairs before in her life.

We have tried pulling her on her leash, calling her, and coaxing her with food. We have had to carry her up and down the stairs in order to get her to my room at night. We are completely lost and sincerely need help. Could you please tell me if you know any technique of teaching a dog how to use stairs.

The Solution

This will take some time but it will work.

First day, put your dog’s food bowl with dinner on the first stair. The second day, put it on the second stair, and so on. Eventually you will be feeding the dog at the top of the stairs and he will grow comfortable with negotiating stairs.
